How do they rationalize this?

Ok the PETA folks are raving progressives and are pushing to outlaw all pet sales in S.F. they say they are "saving very small but very important lives" how do these people hold such regard for animals yet side with the pro choice crowd??? I would think life would be life right?? I am split on abortion but the question isn't about me but about the seeming hypocrisy of their train of thought.
